Digitalization in Construction: From Theory to Processes That Actually Work | Construct Shift
In construction, “digitalization” looks great in strategy decks.
But on-site, it often stays exactly there: a good intention with little impact.
Companies invest in platforms, CDEs, mobile apps, but the real workflows barely change.
Why? Because unwritten processes and informal habits are stronger than any software.
“Digitalization doesn’t mean moving problems from Excel to more expensive software.”
Where digitalization efforts fail in construction:
- Platforms are implemented without aligning internal workflows
- Tools are deployed without understanding real work habits
- Role impact and ownership shifts are ignored
- No clear data governance is established
Simple example:
A Design & Build firm rolls out a Common Data Environment (CDE):
• PMs still exchange critical documents via WhatsApp.
• The digital model is complete, yet site crews use printed drawings.
• Teams “don’t have time” to learn the interface.
Result?
The CDE is seen as a burden, not a support system.
Not because it’s a bad idea, but because the field reality was never mapped or integrated.
What actually works:
✔ Diagnosing real workflows (not just the “official” ones)
✔ Identifying friction points where data and decisions get lost
✔ Establishing clear governance: who validates, how is it communicated, where is traceability maintained
✔ Pacing implementation to match team dynamics
✔ Integrating tech as a support for people—not the other way around
Sustainable digitalization means:
→ Not pushing tools as a solution
→ But building processes that truly work in your organizational context
